FLIPPING for Canada Day

First he'll march in the Canada Day parade as a city councilor.
Then he'll put on martial arts clothing to jump through the air and perform high kicks in Del Crary Park for a crowd of onlookers.
Coun. Dean Pappas will be busy on Wednesday, celebrating Canada's birthday in downtown Peterborough.
Pappas says he will enjoy the traditional parade, starting at noon in front of city hall and proceeding down George St. to Morrow Park.
But another important aspect will be his participation in a Hapkido (a form of martial arts) demonstration on the shores of Little Lake in the afternoon.
Pappas has been studying Hapkido at the Moo Gong Kwan Korean martial arts school, on Park St. S., for almost eight years and says it has helped him improve his mental clarity and physical prowess.
The second-degree blackbelt says he wants to share that passion with others. But perhaps more importantly, he says, the demonstration instills a true sense of multiculturalism in Peterborough on Canada Day.
The New Canadians Centre usually hosts a multicultural event at Del Crary Park after the Canada Day parade, including ethnic food and dancers from across the world.
Pappas, whose parents are Greek and who's studying under Korean marital arts teacher Kwang-Suk Choi, says he hopes people learn to embrace multiculturalism.
"The story of multiculturalism is the story of the world," Pappas says.
Peterborough and area families can expect a bigger and better parade this Canada Day, says parade organizer Debbie Murphy, of the Art School of Peterborough.
About 70 floats are registered -- up from 60 last year, she says.
The theme will be "Honouring our Servicemen, Servicewomen and Peacekeepers, Past and Present."
Festivities will start at 10:15 a. m., she says, in front of city hall.
Children who want to enter the bike decorating contest can bring their bikes, decorated with a Canada Day theme, to the front of Peterborough Collegiate at that time to register.
It's for children aged five to 12, she adds. Free face painting will be available on an ongoing basis at Confederation Square, she says.
Introductions are to then start about 10:30 a. m., she says, as the Peterborough Singers Pop Ensemble sing a medley of Second World War songs in front of city hall.
A screen will be set up there, she says, to display a historical montage of photos from the First World War, Second World War and the Korean War.
MP Dean Del Mastro, MPP Jeff Leal, Mayor Paul Ayotte and county Deputy Warden J. Murray Jones are scheduled to be there, she adds.
The bike contest will be judged at 11:15 a. m. and then everyone can get a free slice of Canada Day cake about 11:30 a. m., Murphy says.
Just before noon, the Aces of Harmony are to lead the crowd in the singing of O Canada before the floats proceed down George St.
The Pedal for Hope team -- local officers who cycled to raise money for pediatric cancer research -- will be in the parade this year, Murphy says. She says the team will ride alongside the children who are part of the bike decorating contest.
"We're expecting a huge, huge crowd because of the theme and because there are lots of new entries" Murphy says. "This is definitely something the whole family can enjoy."
NOTE: The parade still need volunteers, at least 14 years old, to carry flags in the parade, says organizer Debbie Murphy. If you want to volunteer or find out more information, call 742-7777 ext. 1827.
